This is an introductory course in statistical methods with the emphasis on statistical techniques applicable to the social sciences. The approach will be largely non-mathematical, concentrating on concepts rather than mathematical theory. The statistical package SPSS will be used where appropriate as a teaching tool and computational aid (previous experience is not assumed). The course is designed to achieve two goals:
v To give students a lasting appreciation of the vital role of the field of statistics in empirical research
v To teach students to understand and use some useful statistical methods in empirical research.
