About This Course

This course is designed for educators to learn more about nonviolence and how to apply it to their teaching. It is a collaboration between the Metta Center for Nonviolence and Teachers Without Borders.

At the end of this 120-hour online and interactive certification course, participants will:

  • Develop an appreciation for and be able to clearly articulate the difference between strategic and principled nonviolence
  • Gain knowledge on core theories of the science and history of nonviolence
  • Engage with frequently posed arguments against nonviolence and emerge with strategies and examples to respond to critics
  • Gain insight into the "paradigm shift" embedded in a nonviolent worldview
  • Strengthen competency in the interpretation of nonviolent events when they occur in the media
  • Be prepared to articulate the "state of the art" of the field of nonviolence
  • Relate all of the concepts to their teaching practice

The course includes a variety of components including:

  • Weekly readings on nonviolence
  • Discussion forum for group dialogue
  • Weekly podcasts 
  • Blog entries on relating the weekly themes to classroom practice

Participants have the opportunity to interact with their instructors and peers around the world through the discussion forum and blog postings. Participants can also submit questions to the Metta Center, and will be answered by a weekly webcast.
